<p class="Text_20_body">La Diabetes Mellitus (DM) es un desorden metabólico crónico, caracterizado por un aumento de la glicemia sanguínea (hiperglicemia) con alteraciones del metabolismo de los carbohidratos, grasas y proteínas, resultante de la disminución de la secreción y/o acción de la insulina. <b>Su curso es progresivo, y se acompaña de lesiones </b><b>microvasculares</b> (retina, riñón, nervios) y <b>macrovasculares</b> (cerebro, corazón, extremidades inferiores), cuando no se trata adecuadamente la hiperglicemia y los factores de riesgo cardiovascular asociados (1).</p><p class="Text_20_body">
<b>La clasificación de la DM se basa en su etiopatogenia, incluye cuatro categorías de pacientes y un quinto grupo de individuos que tienen glicemias anormales que condicionan un alto riesgo de </b>
<b>desarrollar DM:</b>

<p class="P32">Diabetes Mellitus tipo 1. </p>
</li>
<li>
<p class="P32">Diabetes Mellitus tipo 2. </p>
</li>
<li>
<p class="P32">Otros tipos específicos de Diabetes. </p>
</li>
<li>
<p class="P32">Diabetes Gestacional.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p class="P32">Intolerancia a la glucosa y glicemia de ayunas alterada.</p>
</li>
</ul><p class="P23">La Diabetes Mellitus Tipo 2 es la forma más frecuente, contemplando un 90 y 95% de los casos de la enfermedad (2). <b>Si bien su prevalencia aumenta con la edad, puede aparecer en cualquier edad de la vida</b>. El desarrollo de la DM Tipo 2 es la consecuencia de la incapacidad del páncreas endocrino de producir suficiente insulina para cubrir el incremento de su demanda debida a una menor respuesta o sensibilidad de los tejidos periféricos a la hormona (insulinorrersistencia) (2). Si bien la mayor parte de los pacientes logra un control metabólico adecuado mediante adopción de estilos de vida saludables (práctica regular de actividad física y plan de alimentación adecuada) e hipoglicemiantes orales, durante el transcurso de la enfermedad un porcentaje variable de pacientes puede requerir de tratamiento con insulina para lograr dicho control. </p><img class="img-small"
